Car of the Week

1952 Petersen 6.5-Litre Road Racer

When I saw this car at the 2014 Western Washington All British Field Meet I stopped dead in my tracks. It’s quite simply a showstopper. A Bentley chassis with a 6.5-liter supercharged Rolls engine, drivetrain and all custom bodywork. The guy above looks like he should be driving it.

This 2,970 lb., 400 HP car actually pays homage to the 1930’s, a built-to-order re-creation by coachbuilder Bob Petersen Engineering in England using an original 1952 Bentley Mk VI chassis. And yes, that’s the same company that built the Bentley “Blue Train” Speed Six re-creation shown below and previously featured in our Car of the Week post, “1926 Bentley 6-1/2 Liter”Woolfe” Speed Six.”

Jay Leno also happens to own a Petersen car – a Petersen 27-liter Meteor with a Rolls Royce Merlin WWII aircraft engine detuned to about 660 HP and 1,600 ft/lb of torque! Jay says the 12,000 lb. car is magnificent fun to drive and barely gets above idle even at freeway speeds.

Petersen Engineering makes cars like these to order. They are surprisingly inexpensive, that is, if you consider a couple hundred grand inexpensive. You can learn more at JayLenosGarage.com and at bobpetersenengineering.co.uk.
